A fraction is made up of two parts: a numerator (the top number) and a denominator (the bottom number). When adding fractions, decompose the fractions into smaller equal units and then add the numerators.
For example, 1/3 can be added to to 3/6 by decomposing 1/3 into 2 smaller equal units of sixths and then the numerators, 2 and 3, can be added together, which is 5. 1/3 + 3/6 = 5/6
