A fraction is made up of two parts: a numerator (the top number) and a denominator (the bottom number). When multiplying a fraction by a number, decompose the number into smaller equal units and then place those units on a tape diagram. If the number of equal units is the value of the denominator, then select the same number of units as the numerator.
For example, if you want 2/3 of a 12 oz drink:
- Decompose 12 into 3 equal units (4 in each unit)
- Select 2 of those units (8)
