When dividing numbers, it can be helpful to decompose the first number on a place-value chart and then separate them into equal groups, so the missing part of the whole number can be more easily identified
For example, if we have 112 ÷ 4
- Decompose 112 into 1 hundred, 1 ten, and 2 ones
- Distribute the place-value disks into 4 equal groups, starting with hundreds
- Since 1 cannot be distributed into 4 equal groups, decompose hundred into 10 tens and add that to remaining 1 ten
- Distribute the 11 tens into 4 equal groups (2 tens and 3 remaining)
- Distribute 3 remaining tens into 30 ones and add to remaining 2 ones
- Distribute 12 ones into 4 equal groups (8 in each), so the result is 28
