When you have an equation with a variable, it means there is an unknown value that we need to figure out. A variable, like x, is a placeholder for that unknown number. Our goal is to find out what number the variable represents by isolating it on one side of the equation.
For example, if you have the equation 5x + 9 = 44, the variable x is the unknown value we need to solve for
- First, move the numbers furthest away from the x to the other side of the equation. In this case, the 9 is furthest, so subtract 9 from both sides (5x = 35)
- Next, isolate the x by dividing both sides of the equation by 5
